A central floral medallion sits on the cream field of this wonderful rug. Across a cream field, a central floral medallion anchors a vertical spray of deep red and brown blossoms. The medallion holds a brown rosette core, with delicate curved orange leaves extending outward into the open ground. Small flower heads scatter across the remaining cream space, filling the field without crowding the center. A wide brown border frames the design, carrying a repeat of small multicolor blooms in orange, pink and green. Narrow guard stripes edge the main border on both sides. Pile is full across the face. The bright cream ground lightens the deep reds, and the rug suits a small entryway. At 1'11" by 2'11", it fits an entry, a hallway corner or the space beside a bed.
Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.
About Hamedan rugs
In the 5th century BCE the Greek historian Herodotus described Ecbatana, the ancient city under Hamedan, as ringed by seven concentric walls. Many village rugs from around Hamedan went to market through Mosul several generations ago, which is why they were called Mosul rugs. Hamedan is a city and weaving region in western Persia, and hundreds of villages around the city have sent rugs to its markets for generations. Long narrow formats are a Hamedan specialty, woven for the corridors of local houses. The narrow shape carries a crowded floral drawing in red and brown. The cream field sets those motifs in sharp relief, while the brown border contains the busy pattern within a steady frame.

Returns & exchangesMade entirely by hand.
Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
