Hooked forms stand in vertical columns on the tan field of this wonderful rug. Hooked geometric forms in navy and rust cover the tan field, arranged in vertical columns of repeating motifs. No central medallion sits in the middle, so the design runs evenly from top to bottom. The main border is cream, carrying a row of small diamonds in ochre and brown. Narrow guard stripes edge the border on each side. The pile is full. It brings a warm, earthy note to a small space, balancing the dark navy lines against the light ground. At 2'1" by 2'9", it fits an entry, a hallway corner or the space beside a bed.
Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.
About Baluch rugs
Britannica notes that the better Baluch rugs are usually ascribed to Khorasan, and that they show little relationship to the Turkmen weaving they are often grouped with. Among Baluch weavings prayer rugs are common, with an arch at one end pointing toward Mecca and a field usually filled with the leaves and stems of a stylized tree. Baluch rugs come from the semi-nomadic groups of eastern Persia and western Afghanistan. Formats are small because the looms were portable, and the designs repeat a few motifs that traveled between camps. This rug keeps that small format and the repeating geometric motifs seen in the field. The tan ground lets the navy and rust hooks stand out clearly against the pale background.

Returns & exchangesMade entirely by hand.
Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
