Stepped deep red motifs repeat in rows across this lovely rug. Set within a green field, rows of stepped deep red motifs repeat in a strict grid. Each tribal emblem holds a small pale diamond at its center, flanked by tiny hooked motifs in the open ground. The pattern covers the whole face with no single focal point, running across the weave from side to side. A narrow gray beige border carries a line of small near-black geometric marks, framed by a thin near-black guard stripe on the outer edge. The pile has thinned in a few patches across the face, revealing the white foundation in scattered spots. The cool green ground balances the warm red figures. At 1'4" by 2'4", it fits an entry, a hallway corner or the space beside a bed.
Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.
About Torkaman rugs
Turkmen women wove the furnishings of the tent: carpets for floors and entryways, and smaller pieces made into bags and animal trappings. Among the Turkmen special carpets are woven for the birth of a child, for weddings, and for prayer and mourning. Turkmen weavers in northeastern Persia follow a strict repeating grid of gul motifs, one octagonal figure repeated across the field with almost no variation. It sounds austere, but it is the opposite: because the drawing never changes, all the life is in the color. The design holds that same repetition here, with the stepped shapes set hard against the green ground. The deep red figures remain distinct, and the pale centers add a light note to the cool field.

Returns & exchangesMade entirely by hand.
Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
