Diamond guls in ivory and ochre run in a column down this delightful rug. Set within a deep red field, a column of three diamond guls runs down the center, each worked in ivory, ochre and near-black. Small stepped motifs in near-black and rust flank the central figures on the open ground. A burgundy main border carries a repeating geometric pattern in ivory and brown, framed by narrow guard stripes. The pile is full from end to end, and the drawing stays clear. It holds a warm note on a console or a side table, where the ivory details stand out against the red ground. At 1'5" by 2'2", it fits an entry, a hallway corner or the space beside a bed.
Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.
About Torkaman rugs
A Turkmen storage bag, hung from the trellis walls of the tent, held the family’s belongings and worked something like a portable wardrobe. Turkmen women wove the furnishings of the tent: carpets for floors and entryways, and smaller pieces made into bags and animal trappings. In northeastern Persia, Turkmen weavers keep to a strict grid of gul motifs, the same octagonal figure repeated across the field with almost no variation. That sounds austere, yet it is the opposite, because the drawing never changes and all the life is in the color. This piece keeps that strict grid, placing the diamond forms in a vertical line down the red ground. The border repeats the same geometric language in a darker tone and frames the column.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
