A large stepped medallion in camel and cream sits on this wonderful rug. On a deep red field, a large stepped medallion in camel and cream has a small geometric core at its heart. Handsome black spandrels fill the four corners, each carrying pretty cream sprays with muted pink blossoms. A tan main border surrounds the design, filled with a brown and black geometric lattice. Narrow stripes in cream and black run along both sides of the main band. The pile is full across the rug. It grounds a small floor space, where the bold red and black contrast anchors the eye. At 1'4" by 2', it fits an entry, a hallway corner or the space beside a bed.

Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.
About Hamedan rugs
Greek writers credited Deioces, first king of the Medes, with founding Ecbatana around 678 BCE, and modern Hamedan is built partly on the mound that holds its remains. Avicenna, the physician and philosopher, died in Hamedan in 1037, and his tomb there was rebuilt in the 1950s as a mausoleum with a museum and a library. Hamedan is a city and weaving region in western Persia, and hundreds of villages around the city have sent rugs to its markets for generations. Long narrow formats are a Hamedan specialty, woven for the corridors of local houses, which is why so many of the best vintage runners come from here. On this piece the red field and the black corners meet in strong contrast around a stepped medallion. The small size suits a spot where one bold motif is enough.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
