Angular steel blue motifs gather around the central form of this amazing rug. Across a deep red field, angular motifs in steel blue, cream and dark brown gather around a central form. The medallion is a stepped cross in steel blue with a diamond core of red and near-black checks. Cream corner motifs with blocky shapes in blue sit against the red ground. The main border runs on cream, carrying a lovely vine of small blossoms in red and blue, edged by thin dark brown bands. Full pile runs edge to edge. It anchors a small spot, where the blue center cools the surrounding red. At 1'9" by 1'7", it fits an entry, a hallway corner or the space beside a bed.

It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.
About Heriz rugs
The carpets of the Heriz district were sold in the West under village names: Serapi for those in light, rather bright colors, and Gorevan for the darker ones. Serapi rugs, a Heriz type, take their name from the village of Sirab, in the mountains between Tabriz and Ardabil. Heriz sits east of Tabriz, and it does the opposite of what its neighbor does. Where Tabriz draws a curve, Heriz draws a straight line: big angular medallions and bold corner pieces. This rug keeps that straight line in its stepped medallion and the bold shapes in its corners. The deep red field holds the blue and cream drawing in sharp relief.

Shipping is free and fully insured in the US and Canada. To the UK, the European Union, Australia and New Zealand we ship fully insured, with rates calculated at checkout. Orders are processed and shipped within one to four days and most arrive within about ten days, sometimes as fast as three depending on your location, carefully wrapped, with tracking sent the moment your rug leaves us.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
