Rows of geometric boteh shapes cover this remarkable rug. Rows of dainty geometric boteh shapes in cream, steel blue and green cover a deep red field. There is no central medallion, only this repeat of hooked forms across the red ground. The main border runs on a cream ground, carrying small flowers and a scrolling vine in red and blue. Narrow guard stripes in orange and blue frame the border. The face and the border both hold full pile. It suits a small space where the red and cream can sit close to hand. At 1'7" by 1'7", it fits an entry, a hallway corner or the space beside a bed.
Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.
About Shiraz rugs
Shiraz was the capital of Persia from 1760 to 1779, in the reign of Karim Khan. The Qashqai tribal confederacy was formed in the late 18th century, during or just after the rule of Karim Khan Zand in Shiraz. Shiraz is the market city of Fars province in southern Persia, and the rugs sold under its name came from the tribal and village weavers of the surrounding country. The drawing is geometric and often asymmetric. This rug keeps that geometric drawing in its rows of boteh shapes, each one slightly different from the next. The deep red field holds the cream, blue and green notes in clear relief.

Returns & exchangesMade entirely by hand.
Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
