A teal diamond medallion holds ivory geometric forms at the center of this lovely rug. At the center, a teal diamond medallion holds ivory geometric forms on a deep red field. Ivory tulip-like plants with stepped leaves stand at the top and bottom, while small animals and near-black diamonds fill the open space. A narrow border in rust and orange frames the design. The pile is full across the face, keeping the colors bright and the drawing sharp. It suits a shelf or a small table, where the ivory plants catch the eye against the red ground. At 1'8" by 1'8", it fits an entry, a hallway corner or the space beside a bed.
Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.
About Shiraz rugs
Shiraz was the capital of Persia from 1760 to 1779, in the reign of Karim Khan. The Qashqai tribal confederacy was formed in the late 18th century, during or just after the rule of Karim Khan Zand in Shiraz. Rugs sold under the name Shiraz were woven by tribal and village weavers around the market city of Fars province in southern Persia. Geometric and often asymmetric drawing is the rule, with small stylized animals turning up in the field. This piece keeps that geometric rule, placing small animals among the diamonds and plants. The layout balances the central medallion with the large ivory plants at each end.

Returns & exchangesMade entirely by hand.
Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
