About this rug

A red domed building with two slim towers makes this a charming rug. Over a tan field, a red domed medallion-like building with two slim towers sits above rows of near-black block letters. Faded red script marks the top, while near-black outlined capitals spell out the text below. A thin red border traces the edge of the piece, with no corner motifs, stripes or inner bands. Full pile covers the surface, and the lettering stays sharp. Tan and red tones fill this small piece, holding its spot on the floor. At 1'4" by 1'10", it fits an entry, a hallway corner or the space beside a bed.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Kashan rugs

The story goes that the three Wise Men of the East set out from Kashan to follow the Star of Bethlehem. Under the Safavid shahs Kashan was an important center of the silk trade and of carpet making. Kashan is a central Persian city known for formal rugs with a medallion, corner pieces and curling vine. This small piece is a pictorial mat instead, with a domed building and German lettering set on a plain tan ground. The red and near-black drawing stands out clearly against the field.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.

Genuinely vintage

Hand-knotted decades ago, never machine-made.
