A dark brown vase holds a spray of blossoms in this lovely rug. A deep red field holds a dark brown vase with green leaves, curling stems and a spray of cream, sky blue and brown blossoms. The design rises from the base as a single floral column rather than a central medallion. Small vine tendrils curl beside the vase, and the red ground stays open around the stems. A narrow near-black border runs to the edge around the vase and blooms. A few patches show a lower pile. The bright blooms lift the deep red ground. At 1'6" by 2'1", it fits an entry, a hallway corner or the space beside a bed.
Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.
About Tabriz rugs
Medallion carpet designs of the 16th century are usually associated with Tabriz, then the Safavid capital and the seat of the royal design workshops. A special court workshop, possibly at Tabriz, is credited with translating the most splendid book illuminations into carpets. Tabriz in northwestern Persia has a city workshop tradition, and the discipline of the drawing shows it. Designs there were planned in full before weaving began. This rug keeps that plan, worked here as a single flowering stem. The colors join deep red with cream, sky blue and dark brown.

Returns & exchangesMade entirely by hand.
Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
