About this rug

A dark blue diamond medallion holds gold rosettes on this remarkable rug. Set in a burgundy field, a dark blue diamond medallion holds gold rosettes and a stepped core. Cream corner pieces carry pretty red blossoms and green leaves. The main border runs dark blue, set with a vine of cream and red flowers. A narrow cream guard stripe frames the ground on all sides. Pile is full over the whole rug. It grounds the gold notes against the burgundy ground. At 1'10" by 2'6", it fits an entry, a hallway corner or the space beside a bed.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Tabriz rugs

Isma’il, the first Safavid shah, was crowned in Tabriz in 1501. Tabriz stood for a long period on the great caravan routes to Trebizond and Tiflis, and became the principal market of Persia for the export of rugs. The city workshop tradition of Tabriz, in northwestern Persia, shows in the discipline of the drawing. Centered medallions and borders that turn cleanly at the corners are marks of Tabriz work. This rug keeps that planned layout, with the medallion and corners set hard against the field. The dark blue border frames the burgundy ground with a clear line of flowers.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.

Genuinely vintage

Hand-knotted decades ago, never machine-made.
