Two hexagonal guls sit in a vertical column on this lovely rug. Worked on a burgundy field, two handsome hexagonal guls sit in a vertical column joined by a patterned band. Each gul holds cream and navy geometry with small teal touches at the core. Large triangular motifs point inward from the sides of the field. A wide cream border carries a lattice of navy diamonds filled with red and teal marks. The pile is full across the face and borders. It suits a small floor space where the burgundy and bright cream can stand alone. At 2' by 2'7", it fits an entry, a hallway corner or the space beside a bed.
Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.
About Torkaman rugs
For a wedding Turkmen women wove tasseled trappings for the camel that carried the bride from her father’s tent to that of her new husband. Among the Turkmen special carpets are woven for the birth of a child, for weddings, and for prayer and mourning. Torkaman weavers in northeastern Persia follow a strict repeating grid of gul motifs, one octagonal figure repeated across the field with almost no variation. Because the drawing never changes, all the life is in the color. This rug keeps that strict grid with two identical guls stacked in the center. The burgundy ground holds its strength against the cream lattice.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
