Pale vines climb a central stem on this lovely rug. Rust covers the entire field, where pale vines climb a central stem and drop small blue and cream blossoms across the ground. The drawing forms branching trees and curving sprays rather than a closed medallion shape. A splendid navy main border surrounds the center, filled with a chain of small flower heads in cream, rust and blue. A narrow cream guard stripe edges the field on all sides. The pile is low in places. The warm rust background sets off the pale vine work woven over it. At 1'11" by 2'11", it fits an entry, a hallway corner or the space beside a bed.
Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.
About Kerman rugs
Marco Polo, by Walter Hawley’s account of 1913, wrote of the beautiful shawls and carpets made by the women of Kerman. Since the 16th century Kerman has been the origin of highly sophisticated carpets in well-organized designs. Kerman in southeastern Persia worked in the softest palette of the major Persian centers: powder blue, ivory, rose and pale green, often on a pale ground. The drawing is curvilinear and open, with more space left empty than a Kashan or a Tabriz would allow. This rug keeps that open, curvilinear drawing in its rising vine structure. The rust field gives the piece a deeper weight than a pale ground would.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
