A single pictorial scene of a cream figure holding a blue vessel fills this delightful rug. Over a burgundy field, a cream figure holding a blue vessel stands among lovely rose blossoms and green vines. Small birds rest in the lower branches near the hem of the long dress. No central medallion or corner spandrels interrupt this single pictorial scene. A narrow striped border in cream, black and red lines frames the whole piece. The pile is full across the face, keeping the drawing sharp and the colors distinct. It suits a corner, where the burgundy ground and cream figure give the space a clear focus. At 1'10" by 3'3", it fits an entry, a hallway corner or the space beside a bed.

It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.
About Shiraz rugs
Shiraz was the capital of Persia from 1760 to 1779, in the reign of Karim Khan. The Qashqai tribal confederacy was formed in the late 18th century, during or just after the rule of Karim Khan Zand in Shiraz. Rugs sold under the name Shiraz were woven by tribal and village weavers around the market city of Fars province in southern Persia. Geometric and often asymmetric drawing is the rule, with small stylized animals and birds turning up in the field. This piece keeps the birds in the lower branches and the freehand line of the drawing. The large central figure fills the burgundy ground, framed only by the narrow striped border.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
