Two large diamond medallions on a burgundy field make this a remarkable rug. Cream and navy geometric hooks cover most of the burgundy field around two large diamond medallions. Each medallion holds a small gold center on a red core. A row of cream and navy diamonds runs along the beautiful deep red main border. Thin guard stripes with small cross marks in cream, red and blue frame the outer edge. The pile is full from end to end. It grounds a small space, where the burgundy and navy hold their weight against the cream drawing. At 3'4" by 1'10", it fits an entry, a hallway corner or the space beside a bed.
Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.
About Torkaman rugs
Each Turkmen tribe had its own main gul, its most important symbol, and the flag of Turkmenistan shows the five guls of the five main tribes. The name Bukhara was given to Turkmen rugs in error in the first half of the 20th century, though few Turkmen live around that city. Torkaman rugs from northeastern Persia follow a strict repeating grid of gul motifs, one octagonal figure repeated with almost no variation. It sounds austere, but it is the opposite: because the drawing never changes, all the life is in the color. This piece keeps that rigid grid in its two large diamond figures. The colors stay deep here, shifting between burgundy, navy and cream.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
