Stepped gul motifs are linked by gold crosses on this remarkable rug. Across a red field, rows of stepped gul motifs in camel and cream are linked by gold crosses. Small cream diamonds float in the red space between the larger figures. A wide camel border carries rows of small brown and cream diamonds, edged by thin bands with tiny brown marks. The pile is full from edge to edge. Near a door, the gold drawing stands out against the red ground, making this geometric piece feel warm. At 3'5" by 1'11", it fits an entry, a hallway corner or the space beside a bed.
Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.
About Torkaman rugs
A Yomud main carpet of the mid-1850s at the Cleveland Museum of Art has an aubergine ground, and the decorated skirts at each end are its rarest feature. A main carpet was the prized possession of the round Turkmen tent. In northeastern Persia, Torkaman weavers work to a strict repeating grid of gul motifs, one octagonal figure repeated across the field with almost no variation. Because the drawing never changes, all the life is in the color. This rug keeps that discipline in its rows of identical stepped figures. Here the deep red ground holds its warmth against the lighter camel and gold accents.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
