Two large diamond medallions with small ochre cores sit on this wonderful rug. At the center, two large diamond medallions sit on a burgundy field filled with cream and navy stepped hooks. Each medallion holds a small ochre core inside a burgundy lozenge, surrounded by the splendid angular lattice. A wide burgundy border carries a row of cream diamond shapes, bordered by a thin row of crosses in cream, red and blue. Every band and the field keep full pile. It holds the deep red and navy notes close together in a small space. At 3'2" by 1'10", it fits an entry, a hallway corner or the space beside a bed.
Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.
About Torkaman rugs
A Turkmen girl was already an experienced weaver by the time she was old enough to marry, often shortly before she turned twenty. A Turkmen storage bag, hung from the trellis walls of the tent, held the family’s belongings and worked something like a portable wardrobe. Torkaman weavers in northeastern Persia work to a strict repeating grid of gul motifs, one octagonal figure repeated across the field with almost no variation. Because the drawing never changes, all the life is in the color. This rug keeps that geometric discipline in its two large diamonds and the hooked shapes filling the ground. The burgundy reads strong against the cream and navy outlines.

Returns & exchangesMade entirely by hand.
Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
