About this rug

Rows of boteh-shaped gul motifs repeat across this amazing rug. Rows of boteh-shaped gul motifs in dark brown and cream fill the deep red ground, alternating with small cross figures. No central medallion breaks the grid; the tribal emblem repeats across the red ground. A beautiful near-black main border carries small geometric marks in teal, olive and pink, framed by narrow guard stripes of red and cream triangles. The pile is full from field to border. It brings a deep, warm red to a small floor space, the cream accents lifting the dark brown drawing. At 2' by 2'7", it fits an entry, a hallway corner or the space beside a bed.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Torkaman rugs

A main carpet was the prized possession of the round Turkmen tent. Each Turkmen tribe had its own main gul, its most important symbol, and the flag of Turkmenistan shows the five guls of the five main tribes. In northeastern Persia, Turkmen weavers keep to a strict grid of gul motifs, the same octagonal figure repeated across the field with almost no variation. That sounds austere, yet it is the opposite, because the drawing never changes and all the life is in the color. This rug keeps that strict grid, with the repeating figures and cross shapes set in even rows across the red ground. The saturated red field holds the dark brown and cream drawing steady, while the near-black border frames the warm palette.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
