Small squares form a dense lattice on the burgundy field of this delightful rug. On a burgundy field, small squares in teal, salmon, sage and cream form a dense lattice. The design has no focal point, relying instead on this steady pattern across the whole ground. A black outer band frames a splendid red border carrying small pink and cream rosettes. Narrow cream guard stripes sit on both sides of that border. The pile is full, and every color reads distinct. It suits a bright entry, where the many small shapes catch the light against the deep burgundy ground. At 1'10" by 2'5", it fits an entry, a hallway corner or the space beside a bed.
Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.
About Arak rugs
Arak was founded only in 1808, as the town of Sultanabad, the name the carpet trade went on using. A hundred hamlets and villages within a day’s journey of Sultanabad wove rugs for its market, by the count of Walter Hawley, writing in 1913. Arak in central Persia, known historically as Sultanabad, was the center of one of the largest weaving districts in the country. The surrounding villages supplied the market under their own names, and the shared character is an all-over field. This piece keeps the all-over layout but swaps the floral drawing for a grid of colored squares. The teal, salmon and sage notes stand out clearly against the dark red ground and the black outer band.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
