Rows of octagonal guls run down this amazing rug. Set within a burgundy field, rows of gorgeous octagonal guls carry navy and tan geometric forms. A single motif repeats down the rug, with no large shape gathering the design at the center. A narrow near-black border frames the piece on every side. The pile is full across the rug. A thin near-black outline sets each gul off from the field, and a cross-shaped motif sits at the center of each. A deeper red stripe crosses the field between the top two guls. The dark blue inside each gul cools the warm burgundy ground, and the rug fits neatly into a corner. At 2'1" by 2'6", it fits an entry, a hallway corner or the space beside a bed.
Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.
About Baluch rugs
Among the Baluch a bride and her mother wove the balisht, a pillow often meant for the dowry, and balishts were usually woven in pairs. A 19th-century Baluch prayer rug at Colgate University shows a tree of life, with side panels in designs also found in Saryk Turkmen weaving. Baluch weaving comes from the semi-nomadic groups of eastern Persia and western Afghanistan. The formats are small because the looms were portable, and the designs repeat a handful of motifs carried between camps. This rug keeps that small format and the repeated motif, with the octagonal guls set clearly against the burgundy ground. The navy inside each shape stands out against the near-black border that runs to the edge.

Returns & exchangesMade entirely by hand.
Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
