About this rug

The large stepped navy medallion of this remarkable rug holds a cream core. A deep red field holds small diamond shapes and four stylized slate blue birds at the corners. A large stepped medallion in navy holds a cream core with hooked forms, green crosses and muted pink rosettes around a handsome central red star. The birds stand in open red space at the corners. A narrow outer border runs a zigzag on a cream ground, and diagonal stripes in navy and red fill the side bands. The pile is full in every close view. It grounds a small space, the red field holding the navy and cream drawing steady. At 2'2" by 2'2", it fits an entry, a hallway corner or the space beside a bed.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Shiraz rugs

Shiraz was the capital of Persia from 1760 to 1779, in the reign of Karim Khan. The Qashqai tribal confederacy was formed in the late 18th century, during or just after the rule of Karim Khan Zand in Shiraz. Shiraz is the market city of Fars province in southern Persia, and the rugs sold under its name came from the tribal and village weavers of the surrounding country. The drawing is geometric and often asymmetric, and small stylized animals and birds appear in the field. This rug keeps that geometric drawing and the small birds in the corners, set around a bold stepped medallion. The saturated red and navy hold the colors strong, with cream and muted pink picking out the center.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.

Hand-knotted decades ago, never machine-made.
