A stepped dark blue diamond medallion has a geometric core on this lovely rug. Small stylized animals and birds in cream, rust and dark blue scatter across a deep red field around a central shape. A stepped dark blue diamond medallion holds a cream and orange geometric core at the center of the rug. Splendid cream spandrels with small internal motifs anchor the four corners. The main border runs on a cream ground, carrying dark blue and rust geometric blossoms. The pile is full from the center out to the borders. This small rug brings a warm tribal look to a tight space without taking over. At 2' by 2'1", it fits an entry, a hallway corner or the space beside a bed.
Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.
About Shiraz rugs
The Qashqai tribal confederacy was formed in the late 18th century, during or just after the rule of Karim Khan Zand in Shiraz. The Qashqai have the reputation of making the best rugs of the Shiraz district, the brightest in color, with rich blues and reds. Rugs sold under the name Shiraz were woven by tribal and village weavers around the market city of Fars province in southern Persia. Geometric and often asymmetric drawing is the rule, with small stylized animals and birds turning up in the field. No two are laid out in quite the same way. This piece keeps that geometric rule, with rows of small creatures gathered around the central diamond. The dark blue medallion contrasts sharply with the warm red, while the cream border frames the busy interior.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
