About this rug

A dense grid of small boteh motifs fills the ground of this wonderful rug. On a deep red field, rows of small dark brown boteh motifs repeat in a dense grid with tiny blue accents. There is no central medallion, only the all-over pattern of these curved teardrop shapes filling the ground. The splendid main border runs on a beige ground, carrying small figures in dark brown, red and blue around the perimeter. Thin guard stripes frame this drawing on each side. The pile is full across the field. Its warm red tone and steady rhythm fill a small space. At 1'11" by 2'4", it fits an entry, a hallway corner or the space beside a bed.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Botteh rugs

Mughal emperors promoted and exported textiles decorated with the boteh, which were much appreciated in Europe. In termeh, a luxurious woven cloth of Persia, the boteh was the most common design. Botteh is not a place but a motif: the teardrop with the bent tip that Europe later borrowed and called paisley. Rugs cataloged this way carry the boteh as their organizing figure, repeated across the field in rows. This piece keeps that repeating figure as its sole subject, filling the red ground from edge to edge. The border frames the dense field with angular shapes in dark brown, red and blue on beige.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.

Genuinely vintage

Hand-knotted decades ago, never machine-made.
