A central floral spray stands in the deep red field of this remarkable rug. The deep red field holds a central floral spray in cream, sky blue and tan, surrounded by small scattered motifs. The large blossoms sit open against the red ground. Small corner motifs in tan and blue mark the four corners of the field. A gorgeous navy main border carries a row of small geometric motifs in pink, cream and light blue, with thin cream and tan stripes on either side. The pile is full across the face. At 1'9" by 2'6", it fits an entry, a hallway corner or the space beside a bed.

It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.
About Arak rugs
The biggest exporter of oriental carpets from Persia in the late 19th century was the Ziegler company of Arak, the town then called Sultanabad. Walter Hawley, writing on rugs in 1913, counted a hundred hamlets and villages within a day’s journey of Sultanabad weaving rugs for its market. Arak in central Persia, known historically as Sultanabad, was the center of one of the largest weaving districts in the country. The surrounding villages supplied the market under their own names, and the shared character is an all-over floral field and a restrained palette. On this rug a central spray of flowers is set against a deep red ground. A navy frame surrounds the cream and sky blue drawing.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
