A column of five stepped guls stands on the burgundy field of this remarkable rug. On a burgundy field, a column of five handsome stepped guls runs down the center, each worked in cream, rust and dark brown. Small geometric sprays float in the open ground around them. The splendid main border is deep red, holding a chain of cream and navy geometric figures linked by small crosses. A pair of narrow guard stripes frames the border. The pile is full over the face and in the borders. It anchors a small space, letting the deep red and cream stand out against a dark floor. At 2'1" by 2'9", it fits an entry, a hallway corner or the space beside a bed.

It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.
About Torkaman rugs
UNESCO added traditional Turkmen carpet making to its list of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2019. Among the Turkmen special carpets are woven for the birth of a child, for weddings, and for prayer and mourning. Torkaman weavers in northeastern Persia work to a strict repeating grid of gul motifs, one octagonal figure repeated across the field with almost no variation. It sounds austere, and it is the opposite: because the drawing never changes, all the life is in the color. This rug follows that grid, with five identical guls stacked in the center. Cream and rust motifs show brightly against the burgundy ground.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
