Three cream hexagonal guls run in a column on the navy ground of this amazing rug. A navy field displays three cream hexagonal guls in a column, joined by narrow patterned bars. Deep red and navy details fill each gul, while hooked red and cream shapes step into the open ground between them. A wide cream border runs a lattice of small diamonds in navy and deep red around the edge. The pile looks dense throughout, and the cream figures stand out sharply from the navy. It fits beside a chair or in a tight entry, where the strong navy and bright cream hold their own. At 1'5" by 2'6", it fits an entry, a hallway corner or the space beside a bed.
Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.
About Torkaman rugs
The reds of Turkmen weaving came from madder root, and each tribe had its own gul. Tekke rugs are the most easily identified of the Turkmen, because the quartered gul of their larger carpets became something of a trademark and was often copied elsewhere. Turkmen weavers in northeastern Persia work to a strict repeating grid of gul motifs, one octagonal figure repeated across the field with almost no variation. Because the drawing never changes, all the life is in the color. Here the same logic holds in a single column of repeated figures down the center. The deep red accents inside the cream shapes stand out clearly against the dark blue ground.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
