About this rug

A lovely dense lattice covers the cream field. Scrolling vines, palmettes and small blossoms in slate blue, navy and touches of wine red form a dense lattice on the cream field. A gorgeous round star medallion anchors the design, its core worked in wine red and navy, with charming pale blue palmettes around it. The main border is sand, carrying a continuous scroll of navy vines with small blue and wine red blossoms. Gray beige guard stripes with a small navy leaf edge the main border on either side. The pile is low in places across the field and full in the borders. The pale ground lets the blue drawing breathe, bringing cool light to the room. At 8' by 9'5", it fits a dining table for four with the chairs pulled out, or a living room with the sofa and chairs fully on it.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Nain rugs

In the second quarter of the 20th century carpet weaving was revived in Isfahan, and it expanded rapidly on exports made for the European market. By the middle of the 20th century Nain was producing carpets of the Isfahan kind in an extremely fine weave. Nain sits on the edge of the central desert near Isfahan. It is one of the few Persian towns whose weaving reputation was built in the twentieth century rather than centuries earlier. The palette is unusually pale for Persia: ivory grounds with soft blue, and closely worked vines. This rug keeps that pale ground and soft blue, with the vines worked fine across the whole field. The medallion gathers the pattern at the center in deeper red and navy.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.

Hand-knotted decades ago, never machine-made.
