About this rug

Charming scrolling vines carry palmettes and rosettes across the cream field. Worked on a cream field, scrolling vines carry palmettes and rosettes in burgundy, steel blue and olive. At the center, a large star medallion is packed with fine floral forms, with small ornamental pendants above and below it. Vines curve into the four corners and gather in flower heads. The handsome main border carries a chain of teal and steel blue palmette shapes joined by near-black vines on a cream ground. Tan guard stripes of leaves and small buds in teal and brown edge it on both sides. The pile is low in places, and in a few spots the foundation shows through. Tightly packed motifs fill the pale palette, so the blue and burgundy notes stand out clearly. At 7'10" by 11', it fits a dining table for four with the chairs pulled out, or a living room with the sofa and chairs fully on it.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Nain rugs

In the second quarter of the 20th century carpet weaving was revived in Isfahan, and it expanded rapidly on exports made for the European market. By the middle of the 20th century Nain was producing carpets of the Isfahan kind in an extremely fine weave. Nain sits on the edge of the central desert near Isfahan. It is one of the few Persian towns whose weaving reputation was built in the twentieth century rather than centuries earlier. This rug keeps that pale palette and the closely worked vines, with the star medallion gathering the drawing at the center. Burgundy flower heads add warmth to the cool blue and cream scheme.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.

Genuinely vintage

Hand-knotted decades ago, never machine-made.
