About this rug

The cream field of this wonderful runner holds rows of stepped red diamonds. The cream field holds rows of stepped red diamonds, each centered with a small olive shape. Black lines outline each geometric form against the light ground, and thin near-black stripes run along the length. A red border frames the length, carrying a repeat of small black diagonal marks, with a dark brown binding along the sides. The pile is full along the whole length. The bright cream ground balances the deep red shapes along this narrow format. At 1'6" by 6', it fits an entry, a hallway corner or the space beside a bed.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Baluch rugs

Older Baluch rugs are typically dark, in reds, browns and blues with touches of white, and many have long striped aprons at both ends. A 19th-century Baluch carpet in the Victoria and Albert Museum has two large red medallions shaped like animals with legs, each holding a small tree. Baluch weaving comes from the semi-nomadic groups of eastern Persia and western Afghanistan. The formats are small because the looms were portable, and the designs repeat a handful of motifs carried between camps. This long narrow rug retains the slender format and the repeating geometric pattern down its length. The stepped diamond forms in red and olive sit hard against the cream field.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
