Paired geometric figures in deep red and gray form a vertical arrangement on this delightful rug. The tan field holds a column of paired geometric figures in deep red and gray, with small cross-shaped motifs between them. There is no central medallion, only this repeating vertical arrangement set against the warm ground. A beautiful ochre border carries small lavender gray animal forms and red and orange cross motifs, framed by narrow guard stripes of sawtooth triangles in dark blue and red. The pile is full across the face and borders. It grounds a small space with its earthy tones, letting the red figures stand out against the lighter center. At 1'4" by 2'6", it fits an entry, a hallway corner or the space beside a bed.
Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.
About Baluch rugs
Rugs of the tribal kind, the Baluch among them, are generally small and are woven on horizontal looms laid out on the ground. A 19th-century rug at Colgate University, attributed to the Bahlul tribal group, repeats diagonal rows of a motif typical of Baluch grain bags. Baluch weaving comes from the semi-nomadic groups of eastern Persia and western Afghanistan. The formats are small because the looms were portable, and the designs repeat a handful of motifs carried between camps. This rug keeps that small scale and the repeating vertical figures seen in the field. Its tan ground and ochre border carry the same compact geometric drawing found in these portable weavings.

Returns & exchangesMade entirely by hand.
Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
