About this rug

A lobed medallion in gray brown stands at the center of this lovely rug. A cream field opens around a splendid central lobed medallion filled with small flowers and vines in gray brown, gray and faint peach. Charming fan-shaped palmettes sit above and below the medallion in the open field. The corners are not separate spandrels but part of a wide floral frame that curves inward from the border. The main border runs in gray beige, carrying scrolling vines, tulips and leaves in gray brown. A fine wavy line with small leaves edges the rug on every side. A full antique wash has brought every color to one warmth, none at strength. The pile is low across the face, and the weave shows in the field. The pale ground sets off the gray brown drawing across a sitting area. At 6'1" by 10'2", it fits a living room with the front legs of the sofa and chairs on the rug, or beside a queen bed.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Isparta rugs

Carpet weaving in Isparta has passed through many stages since 1850, and its carpets first reached buyers overseas through the Oriental Carpet Company. Isparta sits in the lake country of southwestern Turkey, and its workshops spent the twentieth century weaving Persian-influenced floral designs in a distinctly Turkish palette. That palette is softer and chalkier, with more cream and rose than the deep madder of Persia. These are town rugs rather than tribal ones, so the drawing is orderly and the field usually reads calm from across a room. This rug keeps that orderly floral drawing, worked in gray brown against the cream ground. The wide border frames the open field with scrolling vines that stay low in contrast.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
