About this rug

A tight lattice of scrolling vines and palmettes covers this lovely rug. Ivory covers the entire field beneath a gorgeous tight lattice of scrolling vines, palmettes and small rosettes in sage, slate blue and brown. No central medallion breaks the steady rhythm of the floral repeat across the ground. The main border is slate blue, worked with delicate cream flower heads and curling leaves. A narrow dark brown band runs inside it and another outside. The pile is low in places across the field and in the border, where the foundation shows. Sage and blue rest on the pale ground without competing for attention. At 6' by 9'5", it fits a living room with the front legs of the sofa and chairs on the rug, or beside a queen bed.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Isparta rugs

Isparta was one of only five places where the Oriental Carpet Manufacturers, the big carpet exporter of the day, had workshops of its own in 1909. The workshops of Isparta, in the lake country of southwestern Turkey, spent the twentieth century weaving Persian-influenced floral designs in a distinctly Turkish palette. That palette runs softer and chalkier, favoring cream and rose over the deep madder of Persia. As town rugs rather than tribal ones, they keep an orderly drawing, and the field usually reads calm from across a room. This piece keeps the structured layout and calm field, with the ivory ground holding the sage and blue in check. The brown bands add a darker frame around the pale center.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.

Genuinely vintage

Hand-knotted decades ago, never machine-made.
