About this rug

Three navy octagonal medallions run in a row along this remarkable rug. Across a deep red field, three navy octagonal medallions stand in a row, each holding a small diamond of cream and pink checks. Red hook motifs run along the edges of each octagon. A narrow guard stripe of cream triangles on a near-black ground frames the field on every side. The gorgeous main border is deep red, carrying a chain of geometric rosettes in gold, navy, black and cream. The pile is full throughout the rug. It anchors a small entry, where the strong navy shapes cut through the warm red ground. At 1'10" by 3'7", it fits an entry, a hallway corner or the space beside a bed.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Ardabil rugs

The Safavid shahs descended from a long line of Sufi shaikhs who kept their headquarters at Ardabil. The famous Ardabil Carpet has a twin, made for the same shrine at Ardabil and kept today in the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. Ardabil sits high in the northwest of Persia, near the Azerbaijani border. The weaving of the district is firmly geometric, with stepped medallions, hooked borders and strong contrast. This rug keeps that firm geometry, with three bold octagons set against the red ground. The hooked motifs inside the navy shapes and the high contrast between the navy figures and the bright field show the district’s graphic style in a compact format.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.

Genuinely vintage

Hand-knotted decades ago, never machine-made.
