About this rug

A rust diamond medallion with a navy core holds the center of this charming rug. At the center, a rust diamond medallion with a navy hexagonal core sits on an ivory field. Small pendants extend from the upper and lower points of the main figure. Handsome stepped spandrels in gray beige and rust occupy the four corners, mirroring the medallion’s outline. The main border is cream, carrying a chain of small rosettes in blue, rust and green. Narrow guard stripes of rust and cream frame this band. The pile is full over the surface of the rug. The warm rust center stands out clearly against the light ground, giving the design a bright presence. At 2' by 2'11", it fits an entry, a hallway corner or the space beside a bed.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Tabriz rugs

Isma’il, the first Safavid shah, was crowned in Tabriz in 1501. Tabriz in northwestern Persia is a city workshop tradition, and it shows in the discipline of the drawing. Medallions are properly centered, borders turn cleanly at the corners, and the vine scrolls follow a plan worked out in full before weaving began. Tabriz workshops also worked in a wider palette than most, so ivory, beige and pale blue grounds turn up alongside the reds. This rug keeps that centered medallion layout and clean border turns. The ivory ground separates the rust and navy notes, lending the compact format a sharp, graphic presence.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.

Genuinely vintage

Hand-knotted decades ago, never machine-made.
