This charming rug has a central diamond medallion in light blue. The red field holds a splendid central diamond medallion in light blue with cream forms. Two smaller light blue diamonds flank the center, surrounded by sprays of lovely green leaves and near-black blossoms. The olive main border carries a geometric chain of navy and red marks, edged by narrow near-black stripes. The pile is full throughout. It holds a small patch of floor where the red ground and cool blue center can sit together. At 2'7" by 2', it fits an entry, a hallway corner or the space beside a bed.
Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.
About Kashan rugs
Under the Safavid shahs Kashan was an important center of the silk trade and of carpet making. Only about twenty of the silk carpets of the 1500s credited to Kashan are known to survive, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art owns four of them. Kashan, in central Persia, is known for medallion layouts with a field of curling vine and palmette, and for saturated madder reds. This piece keeps the red ground and the central medallion, with the drawing gathered close around the blue diamond. A geometric border frames the field with a steady olive band.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
