Rosettes and curved leaves cover the plum field of this wonderful rug. Rosettes and curved leaves cover the plum field, set within a diamond lattice of deep red and cream. A central diamond medallion holds a cream core with a small blue flower, framed by a red outline. Gorgeous cream spandrels fill the four corners, carrying scattered blue and red floral sprays. The main border runs deep red, filled with delicate stylized blue and cream palmettes linked by vines. Narrow guard stripes in cream and blue edge the border on both sides. Dense full pile keeps every line clean. The plum ground holds the red and cream steady in this compact piece of pattern. At 2' by 2'9", it fits an entry, a hallway corner or the space beside a bed.

About Mahal rugs
Arak was founded only in 1808, as the town of Sultanabad, the name the carpet trade went on using. In 1913 the rugs of its district sold under three names: Sultanabad, Savalan, after a range of mountains to the north, and Mahal. Mahal rugs come from the villages around Arak in central Persia, and they were woven large and open from the start. That means a wide field and generous spacing between the motifs. This rug keeps that spacing, letting the rosettes breathe across the plum ground. The deep red border frames the field clearly, balancing the lighter cream corners.

Shipping is free and fully insured in the US and Canada. To the UK, the European Union, Australia and New Zealand we ship fully insured, with rates calculated at checkout. Orders are processed and shipped within one to four days and most arrive within about ten days, sometimes as fast as three depending on your location, carefully wrapped, with tracking sent the moment your rug leaves us.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
