A red medallion sits on the slate blue field of this delightful rug. The slate blue field holds a dense lattice of delicate red rosettes and curled boteh shapes. A red medallion sits at the center, with a small cream lozenge at its core. Beautiful cream spandrels fill the corners, carrying scattered blue and red floral marks. The main border is red, set with cream and blue palmettes linked by vines. Pile is full everywhere on the face. It anchors a compact floor area where the cool blue ground meets the warm red drawing. At 2' by 2'5", it fits an entry, a hallway corner or the space beside a bed.
Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.
About Mahal rugs
The town of Arak dates only from 1808, when it was founded as Sultanabad, a name the carpet trade kept. A hundred hamlets and villages within a day’s journey of Sultanabad wove rugs for its market, by the count of Walter Hawley, writing in 1913. Mahal rugs come from the villages around Arak in central Persia, where weavers favored open fields of repeating small motifs. This piece keeps that open drawing in a small format, with red rosettes floating on the blue ground. The red border frames the center without crowding the medallion.

Orders are processed and shipped within one to four days and most arrive within about ten days, sometimes as fast as three depending on your location, carefully wrapped, with tracking sent the moment your rug leaves us.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
