Stepped red guls with ochre cores repeat across this lovely rug. At the center, handsome stepped red guls with ochre cores repeat across a green field. The field is an all-over repeat with no medallion, and small hooked motifs fill the green spaces between the larger figures. A cream border carries a lattice of small red and navy diamonds around the field. Thin bands of navy dots separate the wide cream band from the green interior. The pile is low in places. The dense drawing holds the deep red and green in a tight grid. At 2' by 2'7", it fits an entry, a hallway corner or the space beside a bed.
Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.
About Torkaman rugs
The name Bukhara was given to Turkmen rugs in error in the first half of the 20th century, though few Turkmen live around that city. UNESCO added traditional Turkmen carpet making to its list of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2019. In northeastern Persia, Torkaman weavers keep to a strict grid of gul motifs, the same figure repeated across the field with almost no variation. The drawing never changes, so the life is in the color. This rug keeps that strict grid of guls, set in rows down the length of the field. The green ground sets the deep red figures apart, and the cream border frames the green with a steady geometric line.

Returns & exchangesMade entirely by hand.
Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
