Three hexagonal guls with burgundy cores make this a delightful rug. On a teal field, a column of three hexagonal guls runs down the center, each holding a burgundy core within cream and near-black steps. A wide border of rust and cream carries rows of small near-black marks, framed by narrow stripes of the same colors. The pile is full across the face. The cool teal ground sets off the warm rust drawing, making a bright geometric note. At 2' by 2'11", it fits an entry, a hallway corner or the space beside a bed.
Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.
About Torkaman rugs
A Turkmen girl was already an experienced weaver by the time she was old enough to marry, often shortly before she turned twenty. For a wedding Turkmen women wove tasseled trappings for the camel that carried the bride from her father’s tent to that of her new husband. Torkaman weavers in northeastern Persia follow a strict repeating grid of gul motifs, one figure repeated across the field with almost no variation. Because the drawing never changes, all the life is in the color. This rug keeps that strict grid, with three matching guls stacked in a column. The teal field sets the rust and cream drawing apart, giving the small piece a clear, bright look.

Returns & exchangesMade entirely by hand.
Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
