About this rug

Three stepped hexagonal medallions run in a column down this charming rug. At the center, a column of three beautiful stepped hexagonal medallions runs down a blue field. A deep red band outlines each medallion, framed by cream steps around a dark maroon core with small green, teal, gray and pink marks. Green triangles and pink diamonds float in the blue ground between the central forms. A gorgeous tan border carries small geometric motifs in green, blue and pink around the perimeter. Narrow guard stripes in teal and dark blue separate the border from the field. The pile is full. The bright red stands out against the dark blue, and the small size fits tight spots. At 2' by 3'6", it fits an entry, a hallway corner or the space beside a bed.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Songhor rugs

Songhor lies in Kermanshah province in western Persia, Kurdish weaving country. Not far from Songhor, in Kermanshah province, the cliff at Bisotun carries a monument that the Persian king Darius I ordered in 521 BC. UNESCO says the Bisotun inscription has been as valuable to the study of ancient Mesopotamia as the Rosetta Stone was to Egyptology. Songhor rugs are geometric, with strong madder reds and deep blues. This piece keeps that geometry in its stepped hexagons and the hard contrast between the red outlines and the blue ground. The tan border frames the saturated field with a more muted, earthy tone.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.

Genuinely vintage

Hand-knotted decades ago, never machine-made.
