This wonderful rug has octagonal guls and stepped motifs in a vertical column. Octagonal guls and stepped motifs fill the dark green field, arranged in a vertical column down the center. The large hexagonal figures hold cream and burgundy diamonds, linked by striped bars on the green ground. A wide border of gray beige carries a beautiful dense lattice of small red and cream motifs. Narrow guard stripes of geometric repeats frame this main band on both sides. Full pile runs across the whole face. The cool green center balances the warm red notes in the surround. At 2' by 2'11", it fits an entry, a hallway corner or the space beside a bed.
Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.
About Torkaman rugs
Turkmen women wove the furnishings of the tent: carpets for floors and entryways, and smaller pieces made into bags and animal trappings. Among the Turkmen special carpets are woven for the birth of a child, for weddings, and for prayer and mourning. In northeastern Persia, Torkaman weavers follow a strict repeating grid of gul motifs, one octagonal figure repeated across the field with almost no variation. Because the drawing never changes, all the life is in the color. This rug keeps that rigid structure, with a column of bold guls aligned vertically. The dark green field sets the burgundy and cream apart, giving the compact piece a clear look.

Shipping is free and fully insured in the US and Canada. To the UK, the European Union, Australia and New Zealand we ship fully insured, with rates calculated at checkout. Orders are processed and shipped within one to four days and most arrive within about ten days, sometimes as fast as three depending on your location, carefully wrapped, with tracking sent the moment your rug leaves us.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
