Small rosettes and leafy vines fill the open ground of this lovely rug. Set within a faded red field, small rosettes and leafy vines in sage, cream and navy fill the open ground. A beautiful central medallion forms a lobed star of muted pink and slate blue around a green core. Curved crescent shapes in cream and green sit at the four corners, holding charming sprays of flowers against the red. The main border is cream, carrying a vine of small blossoms, and narrow guard stripes of dark brown edge the frame. Pile runs low in spots across the field, and the red reads paler in patches. The soft pink and sage notes suit a small corner. At 2'7" by 2'11", it fits an entry, a hallway corner or the space beside a bed.
Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.
About Hamedan rugs
Cyrus the Great took Ecbatana, the ancient city under Hamedan, in 550 BCE, and Alexander the Great took it in 330 BCE. Hamedan is a city and weaving region in western Persia, and hundreds of villages around the city have sent rugs to its markets for generations. Long narrow formats are a Hamedan specialty, woven for the corridors of local houses, which is why so many of the best vintage runners come from here. This piece keeps the floral drawing and the central medallion found in the region’s work, set here in a small square format. The faded red ground holds the scattered blossoms and the cream border together in one warm tone.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
