Curling vines and small blossoms surround a pale blue diamond medallion on this lovely rug. Set within a faded red field, charming curling vines and small blossoms in dark blue, pink and olive surround a central diamond. The medallion is pale blue with a cream core, flanked by two smaller diamonds on the horizontal axis. The field shifts from red to rose toward its ends. A gorgeous tan main border carries a repeating pattern of upright bars in blue, olive and red. Dark blue and red stripes set off this band on each side. The pile is full across the face. The blue center cools the warm red ground when placed in a small space. At 3' by 2'6", it fits an entry, a hallway corner or the space beside a bed.

It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.
About Kashan rugs
It was long the custom to bring raw silk from other places to Kashan to be spun and dyed there. Only about twenty of the silk carpets of the 1500s credited to Kashan are known to survive, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art owns four of them. Kashan, in central Persia, is the city most tied to the formal Persian rug: a central medallion and a field of curling vine and blossom. Saturated madder reds are what old Kashans are known for. This rug keeps the central medallion and the field of curling vine. The drawing carries that intent in the precise birds inside the blue diamond and the ordered floral sprays around it.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
