Dark brown diamond guls repeat across the beige field of this wonderful rug. A beige field holds a strict grid of dark brown diamond guls and small red accents. The pattern repeats across the open ground with no central medallion, relying on the rhythm of the geometric figures. A handsome walnut border frames the design, filled with small cream and brown geometric shapes. Narrow bands in dark brown separate the main border from the beige field. The pile is full over the face and borders. It grounds a small space, letting the dark brown drawing stand out against the light background. At 3'11" by 1'10", it fits an entry, a hallway corner or the space beside a bed.

It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.
About Torkaman rugs
Each Turkmen tribe had its own main gul, its most important symbol, and the flag of Turkmenistan shows the five guls of the five main tribes. The name Bukhara was given to Turkmen rugs in error in the first half of the 20th century, though few Turkmen live around that city. In northeastern Persia, Turkmen weavers keep to a strict grid of gul motifs, the same octagonal figure repeated across the field with almost no variation. That sounds austere, yet it is the opposite, because the drawing never changes and all the life is in the color. This piece maintains that rigid structure, placing rows of dark brown lozenges upon the light base. The palette remains earthy, blending dark brown and walnut around the beige field with small touches of red.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
