About this rug

A navy field framed by a deep red border, with cream, salmon and teal picked out in the drawing. Hand-knotted in Tabriz, Iran, in the 1970s. The pile is low, which keeps the pattern crisp and the rug easy to live with. At 3'4" x 4'11" it works where a big rug cannot go, beside a bed or just inside a door.

Tabriz in north-western Iran is a city workshop tradition, and it shows in the knot count and the discipline of the drawing. Medallions are properly centered, borders resolve neatly at the corners, and the vine scrolls are drawn by someone who could see the whole cartoon before starting. Tabriz workshops also worked in a wider palette than most, so ivory, stone and pale blue grounds turn up alongside the reds.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colours softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
