About this rug

A lobed red medallion with diamond pendants holds a cream core in this lovely rug. Dainty vines and small blossoms fill the faded indigo field, scattered with cream flowers and green leaves around a central shape. A lobed red medallion with a cream core sits at the center, with diamond pendants above and below. The corners hold a pale cream ground with small geometric motifs and floral sprays. The gorgeous main border is red, carrying palmettes and rosettes in blue and cream. Narrow cream guard stripes with a zigzag line frame the border. A few patches in the indigo ground are worn low, with the foundation showing. The dense drawing holds the indigo, red and cream in a tight balance. At 3'3" by 4'4", it fits an entry, a hallway corner or the space beside a bed.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Tabriz rugs

UNESCO lists the historic bazaar of Tabriz as World Heritage and calls it one of the most important commercial centers on the Silk Road. Isma’il, the first Safavid shah, was crowned in Tabriz in 1501. Tabriz in northwestern Persia has a city workshop tradition, and the discipline of the drawing shows it. Medallions sit properly centered, borders turn cleanly at the corners, and the vine scrolls follow a plan laid out in full before weaving began. This rug keeps that centered medallion and the clean turn of the border at each corner. The faded indigo field carries a wide scatter of small flowers in cream and green, set against the red border and the cream corners.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.

Genuinely vintage

Hand-knotted decades ago, never machine-made.
