The large rust hexagonal medallion of this lovely rug holds stepped forms in gray and violet. Small rust rosettes cover the navy field in a dense, repeating lattice around a central figure. A large rust hexagonal medallion sits at the center, holding stepped forms in gray and violet with narrow points extending up and down. Serrated rust edges outline the medallion against the navy ground. The splendid main border is brick red, carrying a row of charming navy round blossoms. A few patches show white specks where the pile has thinned. It holds a strong graphic presence, balancing the deep blue ground with warm red accents. At 3'3" by 4'1", it fits an entry, a hallway corner or the space beside a bed.
Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.
About Zanjan rugs
At Soltaniyeh in the province of Zanjan, its capital, the Mongol Ilkhanid dynasty built the Mausoleum of Oljaytu between 1302 and 1312. Its 50-meter dome, covered in turquoise-blue faience, is the earliest double-shelled dome surviving in Persia. In northwestern Persia, on the road between Tabriz and Hamedan, Zanjan has a village weaving that borrows from both. Geometric designs and long formats are the norm, which is why so many Zanjan pieces are runners. They are working rugs rather than showpieces. This one gathers the central layout into a short format and fills the field with small repeating motifs.

Returns & exchangesMade entirely by hand.
Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
