About this rug

Deep red diamond guls repeat in rows on the green ground of this lovely rug. Set within a green field, rows of deep red diamond guls repeat in a strict grid with cream and near-black details. Smaller geometric motifs fill the spaces between the larger figures across the green ground. The main border is burgundy, holding small geometric forms in cream and dark blue. A band of deep red with fine patterning closes each short end. Scattered white specks mark the places where the pile has worn low. The cool green ground in this corner balances the warm red drawing. At 3'1" by 4'1", it fits an entry, a hallway corner or the space beside a bed.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Torkaman rugs

A Turkmen storage bag, hung from the trellis walls of the tent, held the family’s belongings and worked something like a portable wardrobe. Turkmen women wove the furnishings of the tent: carpets for floors and entryways, and smaller pieces made into bags and animal trappings. In northeastern Persia, Turkmen weavers keep to a strict grid of gul motifs, the same octagonal figure repeated across the field with almost no variation. That sounds austere, yet it is the opposite, because the drawing never changes and all the life is in the color. This rug keeps that strict grid of repeated figures across the green ground. The deep red diamonds stand out against the cool green field, while the burgundy border frames the layout.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.

Genuinely vintage

Hand-knotted decades ago, never machine-made.
