Scrolling vines in deep red cover a navy ground in this charming rug. Scrolling vines in deep red cover a navy ground, making the field look red at first glance. Small palmettes and rosettes in cream, teal and gold fill the spaces between the curling stems. The vine pattern runs to the inner frame on every side, with no corner spandrels. A gorgeous red border carries a scroll of cream leaves, closed by narrow guard stripes. A few patches across the center have lost pile, and white specks show the weave. The dense drawing holds the navy and red together in a small space. At 3'1" by 4'11", it fits an entry, a hallway corner or the space beside a bed.

It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.
About Arak rugs
Arak was founded only in 1808, as the town of Sultanabad, the name the carpet trade went on using. Walter Hawley, writing on rugs in 1913, counted a hundred hamlets and villages within a day’s journey of Sultanabad weaving rugs for its market. Known historically as Sultanabad, Arak in central Persia was the center of one of the country’s largest weaving districts. Surrounding villages supplied the market under their own names, with an all-over floral field as the shared character. This rug keeps that all-over floral field, with no single medallion to gather the eye. The scrolling vine repeats down the length in red over navy, framed by a red border of curling leaves.

Shipping is free and fully insured in the US and Canada. To the UK, the European Union, Australia and New Zealand we ship fully insured, with rates calculated at checkout. Orders are processed and shipped within one to four days and most arrive within about ten days, sometimes as fast as three depending on your location, carefully wrapped, with tracking sent the moment your rug leaves us.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
