This charming rug has rows of rosettes on a deep indigo blue field. Deep indigo blue carries the field, which holds dainty rows of rust and cream rosettes in an all-over repeat with no central medallion. A wide burgundy border frames the center, filled with repeating hexagonal figures in black and rust. A narrow cream guard stripe runs along the inner edge. The pile is worn low across the middle, and the foundation shows in places. Cool blue tones and warm rust accents balance each other in a compact room. At 3'3" by 5'7", it fits an entry, a hallway corner or the space beside a bed.
Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.
About Baluch rugs
A 19th-century rug at Colgate University, attributed to the Bahlul tribal group, repeats diagonal rows of a motif typical of Baluch grain bags. A Baluch bride and her mother wove the balisht, a pillow or grain bag that was often part of the dowry, and such bags were usually woven in pairs. Baluch weaving comes from the semi-nomadic groups of eastern Persia and western Afghanistan. The formats are small because the looms were portable, and the designs repeat a handful of motifs carried between camps. This rug keeps that small scale and the recurring geometric forms in the field. The indigo ground and rust accents create a strong contrast within the dense pattern.

Returns & exchangesMade entirely by hand.
Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
